Ok, I purchased a dvd on knitting cables, but became lost in the sauce b/c the instructor shows just one row of it. I have referred to online tutorials and sign-off feeling DUH!!!. Maybe its me. Ok. the cable I'm trying to do is a 6-st RC and 6-st LC.
6-sts RC - Slip 3 sts to cn and hold to back, k3, k3 from cn;
6-sts RC - Slip 3 sts to cn and hold to front, k3, k3 from cn;
my question is do I cable every other row or every row.
Thanks.

i'm not understanding your question. if it says that for every odd or even row then it sounds like you will have little short cables... you'll do a cable row then probably you purl the back if its in ss. then just folow the pattern. what does the rest of the pattern say after the cable row. or it might tell you in the directions before the cable row. i don't think i'm explaining it well. sorry. maybe someone else can answer. ;)
Ive never done cables. Hope someone can help!!
Thanks Carmell,
I'm practicing from a tutorial sheet I printed out from the net and it starts off explaining how cables work and then jumps to making front cross cables and back cross cables. I knitted a few rows and figured I work in the cables from that and continue knitting to end and begin the knitting again before doing the next row of cables.
I believe you form the cables on the right side only, so every other row.
hang in there, cables are easy once you get it. its a little awkward at first but it does get better. What part are you having trouble with?
Cables are kinda like braiding with your knitting needles. Depending on how complex the cable is, you're basically moving a set of stitches (knit or purl) forward or backward, depending on the pattern.
I find this site to be a godsend. She posts terrific short videos that are very clear and make sense. Also shows how to do the same thing in different knitting styles...

do a search for "cables"
oops, my bad. posted before reading all the posts and didn't realize the question had already been answered -- and better!
Cables are typically knit either every fourth row or every sixth row. You are looking at instructions on how to execute a cable twist after the preceding rows have been knit. Try this: Rows 1-5: knit 4 sts, purl 2 sts, knit 4 sts, purl 2 sts, knit 4 sts, purl 2 sts, knit 4 sts. Row 6: do your cable pattern from your post on the 2 sets of knit sts in the middle. (K4,P2, Knit cable,P2,Knit Cable, P2,K4) Repeat rows 1-6 again. You should see the cable twists. E-mail me if you need more help.
