Crochet ... i hate thee

ok i'm trying to teach myself to crochet... its not going so well. i think the crochet hook dislikes me. or i just do it to tight. but i realize now why i hate picking up stitches. and now i'm mad that crochet feels like i'm picking up stitches... what to do!!!

Check out Crochet Made Easy CD Rom by Coats. If you're having a hard time picking up the stitches, the stitches maybe too tight. A trick I use is crochet my foundation with a larger hook and switch to a smaller hook which enables me to pick-up the stitches easier.

First thing you must do is take that back! How can you hate crochet when it loves you? Remember to chain your foundation chain loosely, or follow Sheila's advice. Second, take your time. The foundation chain is THE slowest part. Hold your hook like your getting ready to write or eat like a grown up, not a toddler. This does a great job with helping your hand relax.

Yeah Girl! I have been learning how to croceht and have been doing it ALL weekend on my afghan....it is going VERY slow! LOL And Nikki is right your foundation is so KEY in crocheting and I didn't realize it until yesterday that it does take the longest to do! WHEW!

http://www.nexstitch.com/ has free online videos you can watch (in the upper left hand corner)

Hopefully this helps you along with everyone else's tips!

Whatcha working on??

hang in there! it is slow to learn, but once you get going, your projects work up much faster than knitting. I really like it for afgans. Knitting afgans takes a while but you can whip up a crocheted on in no time. Try this project once you get going, its a granny square afgan that will give you some instant gratification.

Also, if you look on diynetwork.com and go to uncommon threads you will find some easy patterns created by the women of Crochet Nation. They are a group I believe based out of Georgia. They are women of color and have been featured on the show at least 3 times.
